Profile - Ekachai Eukrongtham (Action Theatre)
Ekachai
Uekrongtham is the founder and artistic director of ACTION Theatre and
was named by Asiaweek as one of Asia's 20 leaders for the Millennium in
Society and Culture. This young producer-director knows the importance
of ambiance in a theatre, especially when, against all nuisances, the
show must go on.
Ekachai spearheaded the restoration of a 2-storey bungalow at 42 Waterloo Street, under the NAC Arts Housing Scheme. It now houses an intimate 100-seat studio theatre and two outdoor performance stages, together with an office upstairs and a restaurant on ground level.
Ekachai proudly points out the 3 distinct designs that line the walls of the office, the stage and the serene Thai cafe: contemporary models, boasting sleek lines and unobstusive shapes, blending beautifully with this award-winning, non-profit theatre organization.
"Because
we are a theatre company, we need a system that is really very, very quiet,"
he stressed. "We also need it to operate for long periods of time
without giving problems."
To his pleasant surprise, Carrier conducted a reconnaissance mission before the actual installation. "They really tried to understand our needs", explained Ekachai who had nothing but praise for the service. "They gave us invaluable advice on how the systems was to be installed and eventually helped us re-located everything."
This
positive impression of Carrier is reinforced whenever the Carrier man
comes by to service the system - rare though these times may be. "The
Carrier man always has time to advise and help", he noted.
