Profile - Swanson Plastics
Swanson
Plastics, located at Pandan Road in Singapore, makes a special grade of
breathable polyethylene (PE) film used in the manufacture of disposable
diapers and sanitary products. "We're probably the only company in
Singapore making it in such a large scale," says Mike Liew, purchasing
officer of Swanson Plastics. The company operates on a 24-hour basis,
with the production staff of 70 working in three shifts.
The office staff are kept cool with a series of Carrier multi-splits, which is not unusual. What is unique is that, in this case, the machinery also needs to be cooled !
Because of the intense heat generated by the manufacturing process, the eight machines are cooled by six chillers ranging from 1.5 - 2 refrigerant tons - similar to those that cool large buildings. PE resin pellets are melted under extremely high temperatures and blended with special additives to enhance the qualities of the final product. This is then formed into thin sheets, designs printed, and finally delivered in giant rolls. The films are exported to countries like Japan, Taiwan and Australia, to be made into the finished products.
"With our manufacturing plant running round the clock, we cannot afford to have breakdowns," says Mr Liew, "We're not talking about uncomfortable staff suffering from the heat because the air-con broke down… the whole production process could be disrupted, and serious damage done to the machines!"
As
such, every piece of equipment - particularly the chillers and cooling
system - has to be kept in good running order at all times. This is a
job well taken care of by Carrier. Mr Liew explained that with Carrier's
service contract, the team comes every month to do a thorough check on
the chillers - this includes chemical cleaning, checking for leaks, clearing
of choked pipes.
With this regular maintenance, the company has not experienced any major problems, apart from occasional power trips due to electricity surges. Even when this occurs during the night, the Carrier man, when beeped, arrives promptly to help set things right.
Mr Liew is glad to have Carrier taking care of the maintenance, and he has not been disappointed with their performance, "They have the necessary expertise and knowledge."
He said that because of his company's non-stop operations, not many air-conditioning companies can provide the necessary level of support needed. "Carrier certainly can," he added with a confident nod of his head.
As further sign of Mr Liew's trust in the air-con experts, his home is also cooled by Carrier.
